What others think of Jalousier? Read survey overview

We have asked our backers, followers and newsletter subscribers to participate in our survey. We don’t want to stew in our own juice, so before we introduce the 2.0 version, we need to know what our supporters think.  Now we have answers to many questions and will go in the right direction. Very interesting analytics comes out, so continue reading :)

Let’s see what has come out for now:

Geo: Most of our supporters come from the USA (61%) and Europe (28%).

Smart home: Majority of responders has (58%) or is planning to get (37%) a smart home system. Most popular technologies are: Wi-Fi, ZigBee, and Z-wave.

2.0 Version: 89% support the upgrade! Wow, that means we read your mind!

Enclosure design: 100% approval!

CordBox with retracting mechanism to avoid cord loops: 50/50 – so we probably should offer it is an option.

Other types of blinds: 60% would like to automate other blinds they have at home. Well, we are working on it!

Solar panel option: 79% vote for green tech - will be done! It will be available as an add-on soon.

Price for Jalousier 2.0:  We can divide all suggestions into two ranges, with 50/50 votes: $30-60 and $70-120. Thanks to the changes in technology, 2.0 is going to be 20-30% more affordable, than 1.0 - so we will be somewhere in the middle!

Number of devices needed: Most popular ranges are 2-5 and 5-10 devices. It makes sense to make discounted bundles of 2, 5 and 10 devices therefore.

Indiegogo campaign: 99% positive feedback – thanks a lot! This was our first ever introduction to the world, thanks for being that loyal!

Suggestions, critics, advice: To sum up, most wishes regarded price, different protocols (or none), Jalousier for other types of blinds, and lots of kind words and wishes of good luck!

Thanks to respondents for being part of our Team! We are heading up to Berlin tonight to present Jalousier to Deutsche Telekom experts and investors! Very excited!

Following up the story on how Jalousier was born here is the video with funny outtakes and bloopers from Jalouiser Intro on Indiegogo. Hope it will make you smile and lift your spirits!

Have a great day!

From Idea to Campaign: How Jalousier was Born

The idea came quite naturally. For the twelfth time that day, Sergey was fiddling with the adjustment for the blinds. We live in an extremely sunny apartment. Using the sun’s natural light saves us energy and money. But we spend a great deal of time adjusting blinds several times a day.

At that moment Sergey was listening to Coursera course on startups. He needed an idea for the practical part (landing page for pre-order with Bitcoin). So he called his brother Dmitry, a talented architect and designer, and suggested that he create a draft design of the device. Then he asked his wife Ksenia, EN-RU translator and business development manager on maternity leave to write content for the website. That’s when our Jalousier Team was born.

We have a huge list of ideas. Like many creative ideas, most of them got stuck in the idea stage. But, this one we decided to fight through to the end. So we defined the budget ($1,500) and time (6-7 months of our free time ) we were ready to sacrifice.  We decided to go with Crowdfunding as it is the best way to get the feedback and check an idea before you invest all your savings.

We had a lot to learn in those first few months. We started by building  community on Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter. We were gaining some long-time supporters. These angels have been following our every small step.

A limited budget was a great motivation for learning. We had to learn how to do many new things. Sergey was new to website development. His last experience with electronics goes back to his university years. Dmitry first faced industrial design and infographic. Probably we haven’t done everything on the highest level, but with the small budget we had at our disposal, we did our best.

Some secret info:

* Housing of the first prototypewas  made of a Lipton tea box.

* The enclosure for the current prototype is not 3D printed. (OOOps!)

As we changed the design at the last moment, we had no time to order 3D printing, as everybody was preparing for the New Year. So we had to make an enclosure ourselves. We spent three nights on it, but no money. It looked even better than a 3D printed one.

* Hand-over hack in the end of the video – inspired by Olympic Fire hand-over – gramophone used as a camera stand

To get the hand-over effect we used an old gramophone to rotate the iPhone. This was a kind of attempt to make up for low resolution. Video was a true challenge, with more than fifty shots required for every pitch.

Prior to the campaign we were stewing in our own juice. We didn’t expect to get such a positive feedback on the campaign presentation. We were happy to discover that our supporters believe in Jalousier!

Why Jalousier is the evolution of blinds automation?

Jalousier is the product we offer for those who has decided to or already are automating windows in their homes and offices.

We set out to disrupt the window coverings industry by designing a solution that addresses the major consumer pain points of existing products: price, installation, controls, technology.

Potential help of Jalousier in specific use-cases

For some senior and/or mobility-impaired individuals, everyday tasks like opening a window blind can actually be the source of significant effort and pain.

Please note that “Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the USA. More than 20 million individuals with arthritis have severe limitations in function on a daily basis” In Osteoarthritis, one of the most common types of arthritis (there are over 100), pain “occurs in hands and fingers, the base of the thumb joint is commonly affected and people experience stiffness, numbness, and aching”.

There is already a huge of array of products that address arthritis related mobility issues and Jalousier would offer a future forward alternative to grabber arms and other reaching aids. It works automatically to adjust the nlinds during the day. Free mobile apps allow for remote control of blinds and settings.

It is estimated that ~10-20MM people suffer from a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in which they “experience a serious mood change when the seasons change”.

Using Jalousier to ensure a home or workplace gets ample sunlight when available throughout the day could potentially help. This small and sleek device works to maximize natural lighting while avoiding direct sunlight.

Our team here at Jalousier warmly wishes you a Happy Holiday! Your support means the world to us and we look forward to sharing a bright and successful year ahead together.

In the new year we will bring Jalousier to your homes!

Like a Christmas miracle, Jalousier device will turn your ordinary blinds into smart blinds: just clip it onto blinds and it will adjust your blinds based on preset temperature goals, light preferences and direction sunlight hits the window.

Free iPhone and Android apps will allow for gesture and remote control of blinds and settings.

Our crowdfunding campaign on indiegogo.com is scheduled to launch in the end of January. Stay tuned to get all the updates!
